Is Perplexity AI Free? Free vs Pro in 2026

Is Perplexity AI free? Yes. The free plan gives unlimited basic searches with cited answers, but only a few advanced ones a day. Pro is $17 a month yearly.
Quick answer: yes, Perplexity is free to use, with or without an account. The free plan covers everyday questions with sourced answers, which is enough for most people. What it limits is the heavy stuff: Perplexity’s own pricing page says the free plan caps advanced searches at “a few per day” and locks you to one default model. Pro costs $17 a month billed annually (about $204 a year) and adds model choice, deep research, more uploads and image generation. We checked Perplexity’s Pro page and help center on November 1, 2026.
Most people asking this aren’t trying to save $17. They want to know if the free version is good enough for research, homework or work questions, and when it stops being enough. That’s what this guide answers.
What Perplexity’s free plan includes
- Unlimited basic searches: Perplexity’s help center calls them “practically unlimited”. Every answer comes with numbered citations you can click to check the source.
- A few advanced searches: the multi-step Pro Search runs a handful of times a day on Free. The help center’s plan table lists 3 a day.
- Automatic model: Perplexity picks the model for you. You can’t choose GPT, Claude or Gemini yourself.
- Basic file uploads: limited, but enough to ask about a PDF now and then.
- Search history and threads: saved when you’re signed in.
What’s missing on Free: choosing advanced models, image generation, deep research at Pro levels and priority support.
Perplexity Free vs Pro vs Max

| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Unlimited basic searches with citations, a few advanced searches a day, one default model, limited uploads |
| Pro | $17/month billed annually | Pick from top models, deep research, more uploads and memory, image generation, Computer access with 4,000 bonus credits |
| Max | $167/month billed annually | Highest limits, frontier models, 10,000 monthly credits plus 35,000 bonus credits, priority access to new features |
| Education Pro | Discounted (help center lists $10/month) | Pro features for verified students and faculty through SheerID |
Perplexity’s Pro page only shows annual pricing. You’ll see the monthly price at checkout. Both paid plans also had a limited-time Computer credit bonus when we checked: $40 on Pro and $450 on Max.
When the free plan is enough
For quick factual questions, product comparisons, news summaries and “what does this mean” lookups, Free works well. The citations are the real draw: you get a short answer and the links to verify it, which a plain chatbot doesn’t always give you. If you mostly need that, don’t pay.
Free starts to pinch in three situations:
- Long research sessions: after a few advanced searches you drop back to basic answers for the rest of the day.
- You want a specific model: say, Claude for writing or GPT for reasoning. Only Pro lets you choose.
- Files and images: analyzing several PDFs or generating images needs Pro.

Is Perplexity Pro worth it?
At $17 a month on a yearly plan, Pro is a little cheaper than most AI subscriptions, and its unusual selling point is that one subscription gives you several companies’ models. The models shown on Perplexity’s Pro page include GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7, Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3. If you’d otherwise pay for two chatbots just to compare answers, that’s real value.
It’s less worth it if you mainly write, code or create images. A dedicated chatbot plan usually goes deeper there. We compare the two most common choices in Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus.
How to get more from Perplexity for free

- Save advanced searches for hard questions: use basic search for simple lookups so your daily advanced searches last.
- Ask follow-ups in the same thread: it keeps context, so you don’t start from zero.
- Open the sources: citations make checking easy, but answers can still misread a page.
- Check for student pricing: verified students and faculty can get Education Pro at a discount.
- Turn off training if you want: by default your searches may be used to improve Perplexity’s AI. You can opt out in Account Settings.
