Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus: pick Perplexity Pro ($17 a month yearly) for cited research across many models, and ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) to create.
Quick answer: if most of what you do is looking things up, checking sources and comparing answers from different models, Perplexity Pro is the better buy at $17 a month on a yearly plan. If you write, code, make images, run agents or want one assistant that remembers your projects, ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month does more. We checked both pricing pages on November 1, 2026.
Both are about the same price, so the real question is what you’ll use it for every day. Here’s how they compare where it matters.

Where Perplexity Pro wins
- Sources you can check: every answer has inline numbered citations that link to the original page. For research, fact-checking and anything you’ll quote, that saves real time.
- Many models in one plan: you can run the same question through OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI models without paying for each. Good for comparing answers.
- Lower yearly price: $17 a month billed yearly versus $20 a month for Plus.
- A useful free tier: if Pro doesn’t stick, Perplexity Free still gives cited answers. See Is Perplexity AI free? for exactly what you keep.
Where ChatGPT Plus wins
- Creating things: long drafts, code, spreadsheets, images and interactive charts are where ChatGPT is strongest.
- Coding and agents: Plus includes Codex and ChatGPT Work across desktop, web and mobile, so it can carry out multi-step tasks, not just answer.
- Memory and projects: projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs make it better as a daily work assistant that knows your context.
- OpenAI’s top models: Plus gets GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol directly from OpenAI, with reasoning built in.
