Nitter alternatives: nitter.net and XCancel are down, but a few community Nitter instances and logged-out x.com still let you read X posts without login.

Quick answer: The two big Nitter sites are gone. Nitter.net now shows a shutdown notice after legal letters from X Corp., and XCancel says its service is suspended. What still worked when we tested on November 4, 2026: community Nitter instances such as nitter.netbub.com and nitter.mizuki.st, and plain x.com, which shows profiles and recent posts to logged-out visitors. Searching X without an account didn’t work anywhere we tried. Below is what we tested, what failed and how to pick a mirror that’s alive.

What happened to Nitter?

Nitter is an open-source front end for X (formerly Twitter): a lightweight page that shows public posts without ads, tracking or a login wall. For years, nitter.net was the main public instance, and XCancel became the popular backup.

Both are now offline. The note on nitter.net, dated October 10, 2026 and signed by Nitter’s developer, says X Corp. sent cease-and-desist letters on August 24 and September 8, 2026, demanding that Nitter instances and the project’s code repository be taken down. It also says the project currently has no legal counsel and is looking for funding and legal help. Nitter.net’s RSS feeds now return a “gone” error. XCancel returns an HTTP 451 page saying that “a new development in the ongoing legal proceedings” forced it to suspend the service again.

So the honest answer to “is Nitter dead?” is: the famous instances are, but the software isn’t. Volunteers still run their own copies, and some of them work today.

Nitter alternatives that worked when we tested

We loaded the @NASA profile on each option from a clean browser with no X account, then checked whether posts actually appeared.

1. Community Nitter instances

The Nitter instance health page listed 11 healthy instances at its last update (November 3, 2026, 23:54 UTC). We tried several:

  • nitter.netbub.com: loaded the full profile and posts, and its RSS feed returned 22 items. The best all-rounder in our test.
  • nitter.mizuki.st: loaded the profile and posts. No RSS feed.
  • nitter.tiekoetter.com: loaded in a normal browser after a short bot check, but blocked scripted requests, so RSS readers may struggle.
  • nitter.jaydenha.uk: showed posts after a browser challenge.
  • nitter.pp.ua and shitter.thepixora.com: both are listed as healthy, but showed a “prove you’re human” puzzle before any content.

Instances come and go, so treat any list, including ours, as a snapshot. The health page is the place to check before you bookmark one. It also asks people not to use public instances for scraping and to host Nitter themselves instead.

2. x.com without logging in

This surprises people: X itself now shows a lot to logged-out visitors. On November 4, x.com/NASA showed the bio, follower count and a run of recent posts with images and video. Single post links open too. What you can’t do is search: x.com/search sent us straight to the sign-up screen. You’ll also see login prompts, and X sees your visit, so this is the least private option.

3. Thread Reader App for threads

If you mostly read long threads, Thread Reader App still loads and shows unrolled threads as one clean page. It’s a reader for threads that someone has unrolled, not a full timeline viewer.

Alternatives that didn’t work

  • Twiiit: it used to redirect you to a random working instance. It sent us to mirrors behind a security check that never let us through.
  • Sotwe and TwStalker: both showed a security verification page and no content in our test.
  • Old instance lists: many older roundups still recommend nitter.poast.org, nitter.privacydev.net and other mirrors. Those didn’t load for us, so check any list’s date.

Which one should you use?

How to view X without an account in five steps

Our take: for quick reading, plain x.com logged out is now the most reliable option, even though it’s the least private. For a clean, tracker-free view or RSS, use a healthy community Nitter instance and expect to switch now and then. Don’t type your X password into any third-party mirror. Nitter doesn’t need it, and a site that asks is a red flag.

If you follow X accounts for work, a feed or scheduler is often a better fit than a mirror. See our guide to setting up an AI social media scheduler, and if you want to stay on X and summarize posts instead, our Grok review covers X’s built-in AI. Frequently asked questions

Is Nitter still working in 2026?

Partly. Nitter.net shut down after X Corp. sent cease-and-desist letters, but community instances such as nitter.netbub.com and nitter.mizuki.st still loaded posts on November 4, 2026.

What happened to XCancel?

XCancel shows a notice that its service is suspended because of a new development in ongoing legal proceedings. It returns an HTTP 451 error instead of posts.

Can I view X without an account?

Yes, partly. Profiles and single posts on x.com load without logging in, but search sends you to the sign-up page. Nitter instances also work without an account.

Is there a Nitter RSS alternative?

Some community instances still serve RSS. Add /rss to a profile URL. In our test, nitter.netbub.com returned a working feed, while several others blocked feed readers.

Is it safe to use Nitter instances?

Reading is low risk, but each instance is run by a volunteer who can see your visits. Never enter your X password on a mirror. Nitter never needs it.
