Scribbr is a student writing platform with a free citation generator, AI detector and paraphraser, plus paid plagiarism checks from $19.95 per document.
Quick answer: Scribbr is built for students writing essays, theses and dissertations. Most of its tools are free: the citation generator, AI detector, paraphrasing tool, grammar checker and a large knowledge base on academic writing. You pay only for the heavier services, mainly a plagiarism check priced per document and human proofreading priced per word. There’s no monthly subscription for the plagiarism checker. We checked prices on Scribbr’s plagiarism checker page and proofreading page on November 5, 2026.

What Scribbr offers
- Citation Generator: free APA, MLA and Chicago citations, plus a Chrome extension that cites any page in one click.
- Plagiarism Checker: a paid, per-document check that compares your paper against web pages and publications and gives a similarity percentage.
- AI Detector: free and unlimited for texts up to 1,200 words per check, with a more accurate premium version.
- Free writing tools: a paraphraser (125 words per input), grammar checker, AI Proofreader, summarizer and AI Humanizer. Scribbr also offers a Chat PDF tool.
- Proofreading and editing: human academic editors, with optional structure, clarity, formatting and citation checks.
- Knowledge Base: free guides, videos and templates that Scribbr says reach 5 million students a month.
The plagiarism checker
This is Scribbr’s main paid product, and its pitch is accuracy and privacy. It uses the same kind of software as universities and publishers, highlights each match with its source, lets you compare passages side by side, and can check for self-plagiarism against your own earlier papers. Scribbr says submissions are never added to a shared database, so you won’t get a 100% match when your university checks the same paper later.
A premium check also unlocks the premium AI Detector and AI Proofreader for that document. Scribbr itself says the checker isn’t meant for copywriters, SEO teams or businesses.

Scribbr Pricing (2026)
| Service | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Citation Generator, AI Detector, paraphraser, grammar checker | $0 | Free AI Detector up to 1,200 words per check; paraphraser up to 125 words per input |
| Plagiarism check, small document | $19.95 | Up to 7,499 words, per check |
| Plagiarism check, regular document | $29.95 | 7,500 to 49,999 words, per check |
| Plagiarism check, large document | $39.95 | 50,000+ words, per check |
| Proofreading and editing | From $0.017 per word | University level, 7-day deadline; faster deadlines cost more |
Proofreading is priced by word count, deadline and level. In the price table behind Scribbr’s calculator, standard university-level proofreading is $0.017 per word for a 7-day deadline, $0.0255 for 3 days, $0.034 for 24 hours and $0.051 for same-day delivery, with slightly higher rates for PhD and MBA work. Use the calculator for an exact quote, since add-ons like the structure or clarity check cost extra.
Is Scribbr free? Mostly. The citation generator, AI detector, paraphraser, grammar checker and knowledge base are free. Plagiarism checks and human proofreading are paid per document or per word.

Who Scribbr is for
Students are the clear audience. The free citation tools alone save hours, and a one-off plagiarism check before submitting a thesis is good insurance. For everyday rewriting, compare it with QuillBot. If you’re exploring AI study help more broadly, our guide on how AI can help students covers the options, and remember that AI detectors, Scribbr’s included, aren’t fully reliable. Limitations
- Plagiarism checks add up: each document is a separate charge, with no subscription option.
- Free AI detection is limited: 1,200 words per check, and Scribbr says its free detector is less accurate than the premium one.
- Short free paraphrasing: 125 words per input.
- Student focus: not designed for business or SEO content checks.
- Ads on free tools: some free tools show ads to non-customers.
TechPilot.ai’s Verdict on Scribbr
Scribbr is one of the most useful free resources a student can bookmark, especially for citations and academic writing guides.
Pay for a plagiarism check when it matters, such as before a thesis or dissertation, rather than for every essay.
Scribbr FAQ
Is Scribbr free?
Mostly. The citation generator, AI detector, paraphraser, grammar checker and knowledge base are free. Plagiarism checks and human proofreading are paid.
•
How much does Scribbr cost?
A Scribbr plagiarism check costs $19.95 for up to 7,499 words, $29.95 for 7,500 to 49,999 words and $39.95 for 50,000+ words. Proofreading is priced per word.
•
Is the Scribbr plagiarism checker a subscription?
No. You pay per document, per check. Scribbr doesn’t sell a monthly subscription for its plagiarism checker.
•
Does Scribbr store my paper?
Scribbr says submissions are never added to its content database, so a later check by your university won’t flag a 100% match from Scribbr.
•
Is the Scribbr AI detector accurate?
The free version checks up to 1,200 words at a time and is less accurate than the premium one. No AI detector is fully reliable, so treat results as a signal.
