DuckDuckGo AI Chat vs ChatGPT: Duck.ai gives free, anonymous chats with no account, while ChatGPT wins on tools, memory and agents. Here’s which to pick.

Quick answer: Use Duck.ai, DuckDuckGo’s AI chat, when privacy matters more than features: you don’t sign in, your chats stay on your device, and DuckDuckGo strips your IP address before a prompt reaches the model provider. Use ChatGPT when you need projects, memory, file work, deep research or Codex. Both have free plans, so most people should keep both. We checked every plan, model and price below on DuckDuckGo’s and OpenAI’s help pages on November 4, 2026.

Duck.ai vs ChatGPT compared: sign-up, free models, training on chats, history and paid plans

What is DuckDuckGo AI Chat?

DuckDuckGo AI Chat, now called Duck.ai, is a chat window in front of other companies’ models. DuckDuckGo doesn’t train its own model. It passes your prompt to a provider such as Anthropic, OpenAI or Mistral, removes metadata like your IP address on the way, and returns the reply. To the provider, every request looks like it came from DuckDuckGo.

On November 4, 2026, the free models were Claude 4.5 Haiku, Mistral Small 4, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-5.4 mini, and two open models hosted by Tinfoil: gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B. You can open it at duck.ai in any browser, from DuckDuckGo search results, or in the DuckDuckGo browser. There’s also voice chat and an image mode (pick “New Image” and describe what you want).

Privacy: the real difference

This is where the two products split. According to DuckDuckGo’s privacy page, Duck.ai doesn’t record or store your chats by default, and neither DuckDuckGo nor the model providers use them for training. Every provider has agreed to delete prompts and replies right after answering (zero data retention), with a short list of documented exceptions. Recent Chats are saved locally on your device, and the Fire Button wipes them.

ChatGPT works the other way round. Your chats are saved to your account so you can come back to them, and OpenAI’s help center says it may use conversations to improve its models unless you opt out in Data Controls. That isn’t a flaw. Memory, projects and chat history are why ChatGPT is useful for ongoing work. But it means the safe default is different: with ChatGPT you have to change a setting, while Duck.ai is private from the start. For more on what ChatGPT keeps, see is ChatGPT safe.

One caution for Duck.ai: DuckDuckGo says it doesn’t filter or change the models’ answers, so replies can still be wrong. Private doesn’t mean more accurate.

Models and limits

The free tiers are closer than you might expect. ChatGPT Free gives you unlimited everyday text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice and deep research. Duck.ai Free gives you six models from four makers, but with a daily usage limit that DuckDuckGo doesn’t publish.

Paid plans are where they diverge:

  • DuckDuckGo Plus ($9.99 a month or $99.99 a year): adds GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5.5 in Duck.ai, higher limits, and a weekly allowance you can dip into after the daily limit runs out. It’s a bundle: the same plan includes DuckDuckGo’s VPN, Personal Information Removal (U.S. only) and Identity Theft Restoration.
  • DuckDuckGo Pro ($19.99 a month or $199.99 a year): adds GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus, higher reasoning effort and twice the Plus limits. On November 4, DuckDuckGo’s model page listed Claude Opus 5.5, while its pricing page still said Opus 4.8, so check the model picker after you subscribe.
  • ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month, monthly billing only): advanced reasoning with GPT-6, more messages and uploads, projects, tasks, custom GPTs and more Codex usage.
  • ChatGPT Pro ($100, $200 or $500 a month): Pro reasoning, the longest Codex and agent sessions and the highest limits. Only Pro 500 includes Ultrafast mode.

Duck.ai’s daily limits reset at midnight UTC, and the weekly limits reset every Sunday at midnight UTC. DuckDuckGo also warns that a VPN or a cellular connection can make you hit a limit right away, because of how it enforces limits anonymously. Switching to Wi-Fi usually fixes it.

Features: where ChatGPT pulls ahead

Duck.ai is a clean chat box with model switching, voice, image creation and shareable chats. That’s it, and that’s the point. ChatGPT is a full workspace: projects with files and instructions, memory across chats, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, deep research, Codex for coding and agent-style work. If your job runs over days, needs uploaded files or depends on tools, Duck.ai can’t replace it.

The flip side is that Duck.ai lets you compare answers from Claude, GPT, Mistral and open models in one place for free, without making an account with any of them. For a second opinion on a tricky answer, that’s handy. Our verdict: use both, for different jobs

Our take: the question isn’t which chatbot is better. It’s which one should see a given prompt. Anything you wouldn’t want tied to your name, such as health worries, money problems, legal questions or a draft about your employer, belongs in Duck.ai. Work you want to keep building on belongs in ChatGPT.

When to use Duck.ai or ChatGPT: a five-step rule of thumb

On price, DuckDuckGo Plus is half the cost of ChatGPT Plus, but you’re paying for a privacy bundle with a chat upgrade, not a ChatGPT rival. If you already pay for a VPN, that value shrinks. If you’re deciding between paid assistants, our Perplexity Pro vs ChatGPT Plus comparison covers the other main option.
