fal Recast swaps the people in a video from a reference photo while keeping motion and audio. See fal Recast pricing per second, limits and how to use it.

Recast, from the generative media platform fal, is a one-click character swap for video. You upload an existing clip and a photo of the new person, and Recast replaces who’s on screen while keeping the original motion, camera moves, cuts and soundtrack. It runs on MiniMax’s H3 Max video model.

What is fal Recast and why is it trending?

fal announced Recast on X on October 1, 2026 as “an easy way to change any character in one click.” The launch post passed 150,000 views in its first days, according to Launch Archive. fal pitches it for character variations and for adapting campaigns to different audiences without another shoot.

Under the hood, Recast is the minimax/h3-max/recast endpoint on fal. It tracks each person across shots and swaps up to four people at once, using one reference photo per new person.

How fal Recast works

  1. Upload a source video: 5 to 30 seconds long, with no single shot longer than 15 seconds.
  2. Add reference photos: one photo per new person, up to four. By default they replace the main people from left to right.
  3. Add an optional prompt: say who becomes whom, or what to keep or change.
  4. Pick a resolution: 768p or 1080p (1080p is the default).
  5. Get the recast video: fal returns the new clip with the original sound.

You can run it in fal’s browser playground after signing in, or call it from code through fal’s API and its Python and JavaScript clients.

1080p (default)$0.45$4.50$13.50
Per second of output video. Reference images are included at no extra charge. Checked on fal.ai, October 5, 2026. Clip totals are our calculations.

Free plan: fal doesn’t list a free tier for Recast. You pay for each second of output, so a full 30-second clip at 1080p costs $13.50.

Is fal Recast worth it? For marketers who need several versions of the same ad with different people, a few dollars per clip is far cheaper than a reshoot. For casual experiments, test short clips at 768p first.

Best use cases for fal Recast

  • Ad variations: the same spot with different presenters for different markets.
  • Character variations: try several actors or looks in one scene.
  • Localization: adapt a campaign for different audiences without a new shoot.
  • Creative edits: recast music videos, shorts and social clips.

Limitations

  • Short clips only: source videos must be 5 to 30 seconds, with shots of 15 seconds or less.
  • Up to four people: one reference photo per person, four at most.
  • No free tier: every second of output is billed.
  • Developer-first: fal is an API platform, so the interface is more technical than consumer apps.
