GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI’s fast, low-cost model for computer use and daily work. Its API costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens.
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on October 26, 2026 as the successor to GPT-5.6 Terra. It sits between the cheap Luna models and the flagship Sol and Astra models, and it’s tuned for the tasks that fill a workday: reading documents and drawings, filling in forms, using desktop apps and writing clearly. We read the GPT-6.1 Terra announcement and the OpenAI API pricing page on October 29, 2026.
What’s new in GPT-6.1 Terra
- Computer use: on Agents’ Last Exam, OpenAI says Terra at medium effort scores 15 points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about a third of the cost, and matches GPT-6 Astra at a tenth of its price per token.
- Speed: OpenAI says it completes tasks over three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
- Fewer errors: on OpenAI’s internal error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low effort fell from 53.6% (GPT-5.6 Terra) to 16.7%, and to 4.3% at max effort.
- Coding: it solves 50.3% of Terminal-Bench 4.0 tasks at max effort, more than double GPT-5.6 Terra’s 21.5%. OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for the hardest coding work.
- Vision: it beats GPT-5.6 Terra at every reasoning setting on MMMU-Pro and nearly matches GPT-6 Astra.
These are OpenAI’s own benchmark figures. Independent testers such as Artificial Analysis published their own GPT-6.1 Terra evaluations on October 26, so check those before you switch production work.

Is GPT-6.1 Terra free?
No. In ChatGPT, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not on the Free plan. OpenAI says your plan’s usage allowance covers more tasks with Terra than with Sol or Astra. If you want a free option, ChatGPT Free runs GPT-6; see our free chat AI comparison.
GPT-6.1 Terra Pricing (2026)
| API tier | Input | Cached input | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $1.00 | $0.05 | $5.00 |
| Batch / Flex | $0.50 | $0.025 | $2.50 |
| Fast | $2.00 | $0.10 | $10.00 |
| Long context (over 272K input tokens) | $2.00 | $0.10 | $7.50 |
For comparison, GPT-6.1 Sol costs $2 in and $10 out, GPT-5.6 Terra $2 and $12, and GPT-6 Luna $0.10 and $0.50. That makes Terra half the price of Sol for most work. Regional data residency endpoints add 10%. If token math is new to you, our guide to tokens in AI explains how a million tokens translates into text.

GPT-6.1 Terra vs Sol and Astra
Pick Terra for high-volume work where cost and speed matter: invoice entry, form filling, document review and agent tasks. Pick GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra for the most complex coding and reasoning. Our GPT-6 Astra vs Sol comparison covers the bigger models in detail.

Safety
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra meets the Critical threshold in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework and keeps the safeguards built for GPT-6 Astra. It also reports stronger resistance to prompt injection, which matters when a model is browsing or using apps for you.
Limitations
- Not on ChatGPT Free: you need a paid ChatGPT plan or API credits.
- Not the top coder: Sol and Astra remain better for the hardest coding tasks.
- Long prompts cost more: input over 272K tokens is billed at $2 in and $7.50 out.
- Benchmarks are OpenAI’s: independent results may differ.
TechPilot.ai’s Verdict on GPT-6.1 Terra
GPT-6.1 Terra is the new default for cost-sensitive work on OpenAI: near-flagship computer use and vision at $1 in and $5 out.
Move high-volume agent and document jobs to it first, and keep Sol or Astra for the hardest coding and reasoning.
