NaturalReader review: AI text to speech for reading and a commercial voice generator

Natural Readers (NaturalReader) reads text, PDFs and web pages aloud in lifelike AI voices. There’s a free plan, and personal plans start at $79 a year.

Quick answer: NaturalReader is a long-running text to speech app, now used by more than 10 million people by its own count, that runs on modern AI voices from Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs. It comes in two separate products: a personal reader (web, iOS, Android and a Chrome extension) for listening to your own documents, and a commercial AI Voice Generator for voiceovers you publish. The free plan is fine for light listening, but MP3 downloads and the better voices need a paid plan. We checked every price on NaturalReader’s personal pricing page and commercial pricing page on November 4, 2026.

What NaturalReader does

  • Reads almost any file: PDF, EPUB, Word, PowerPoint, Pages and Numbers files, web pages and plain text, with the text highlighted as it reads.
  • OCR: on paid plans it reads scanned documents, images and photos of printed pages.
  • Voice tiers: free device voices, Lite AI voices, Plus voices and HD Pro voices with prompt-based reading styles.
  • AI study tools: AI Podcast turns a document into a podcast-style episode, plus Recap, Quizzes, Screenshot and Chat features.
  • Voice cloning: Plus and Pro let you clone up to 2 voices from a recording.
  • 99+ languages: multilingual voices that detect the language of your text.

Personal vs commercial: the license matters

This is the part most people miss. Audio made with any personal plan (Lite, Plus, Pro or EDU) is for your own private listening only. NaturalReader’s help center is strict about it: YouTube narration, podcasts, e-learning, internal training videos and even classroom presentations all count as commercial use.

For that you need the AI Voice Generator, a browser-based studio with commercially licensed voices, prompt control over tone and accent, voice cloning and MP3 or WAV export. It’s billed in credits per character, and the voice you pick sets the rate: OpenAI, Azure and Google Chirp voices cost 1 credit per character, Gemini voices 1 to 2, and ElevenLabs and cloned voices 10 to 20. So Starter’s 500,000 monthly credits cover about 500,000 characters on an OpenAI voice but only 25,000 to 50,000 on an ElevenLabs one. Unused credits don’t roll over.

A few things to know. Yearly billing is far cheaper: Lite works out to about $6.58 a month and Starter to $16.50. App Store and Google Play prices can differ by region. Schools get separate EDU group plans, from $299 a year for 5 Plus users or $599 a year for 50 Lite users. Commercial subscribers can top up with a one-time 4 million credit pack for $99. The free plan’s daily limits are listed on NaturalReader’s voices and limits page.

Is NaturalReader free? Yes, for listening. The free plan gives unlimited use of your device’s built-in voices and 20,000 characters a day with AI Lite voices. You can’t download MP3s or use OCR on the free plan, and nothing on it is licensed for commercial use.

Who NaturalReader is for

The personal app suits students, people with dyslexia or low vision, and anyone who wants to listen to long PDFs and articles instead of reading them. Lite is the value pick if Lite voices sound good enough to you. The commercial plans make sense for course creators and small video teams who want several voice engines in one place. If voice quality and cloning are your main goal, compare it with ElevenLabs directly, or see our roundup of the best free AI voice generators.

Limitations

  • Two products, two bills: a personal plan doesn’t include the commercial voice generator, and the reverse is also true.
  • Personal audio can’t be shared: even internal training or classroom use needs a commercial plan.
  • Free plan is listening only: no MP3 downloads and no OCR.
  • Premium voices burn credits fast: ElevenLabs and cloned voices cost 10 to 20 credits per character on commercial plans.
  • No commercial mobile app: the iOS and Android apps are for the personal version only.

TechPilot.ai’s Verdict on NaturalReader

NaturalReader is one of the easiest ways to listen to your own documents, and the yearly Lite plan is good value for students and heavy readers.

Just keep the license split in mind: if the audio will be heard by anyone else, budget for a commercial plan from $198 a year instead of a personal one.
