Claude vs ChatGPT in 2026: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both start near $20 a month, but they win at different jobs for writing, coding and research work.
Quick answer: both paid starters land near $20 a month. Claude Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month on annual billing. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. The useful question is not who is “better”, but which jobs each one wins: Claude for long writing and careful coding agents, ChatGPT for everyday breadth, multimodal work and the Work/Codex modes OpenAI ships in the product.

How we compared them
We checked Anthropic’s pricing page and OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page on November 6, 2026, then matched plans to the jobs people actually pay for: drafting, coding, research and handing off finished files. We are not scoring models out of 10. We are mapping strengths.
Pricing side by side
| Plan | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 |
| Starter paid | Pro $20 / mo ($17 / mo yearly) | Plus $20 / mo (Go is a cheaper mid tier in some regions) |
| Heavy tier | Max $100 / mo, Ultra $200 / mo | Pro from $100 / mo (higher tiers available) |
Claude’s individual page lists Free, Pro, Max and Ultra. ChatGPT’s individual page lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro. If you only need light use, both free plans are enough to learn the product. Paid value shows up when you hit rate limits, need projects/files, or run long agent sessions.

Where Claude usually wins
- Long-form writing with a steady voice: Claude tends to hold structure and tone across a long draft without drifting into filler.
- Coding agents and repo work: Claude Code and the higher Max/Ultra usage caps are built for multi-step engineering tasks. Our setup guide for Claude Code covers the install path.
- Careful analysis of a document you paste in: when the brief is “read this and do not invent”, Claude is often the safer first pass.
Where ChatGPT usually wins
- Everyday breadth: one account that covers chat, images, voice, browsing-style research and custom GPTs.
- Work and Codex modes: OpenAI now splits Chat, Work and Codex. Work is useful when you can describe a finished file. See our how to use ChatGPT guide.
- Ecosystem and plugins: connectors into Drive, GitHub, Slack and similar tools are mature on paid plans.

Which should you buy?
- Writers and analysts: start with Claude Pro if most of your week is drafts, edits and document Q&A.
- Generalists and founders: ChatGPT Plus is the broader daily driver.
- Heavy agent users: compare Claude Max/Ultra against ChatGPT Pro tiers using your real weekly workload, not marketing caps.
- Privacy-sensitive chat only: look at lighter wrappers too, such as DuckDuckGo AI Chat vs ChatGPT.
Many people keep both: Claude for the draft that has to sound like them, ChatGPT for the messy everyday queue. That costs about $40 a month, which is still cheaper than wasting hours on the wrong tool.
