Best free AI tools for 2026: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, Google Flow, Canva and more. See what each free plan really includes and when to pay up.
Quick answer: the best free AI for most people is ChatGPT Free, which now gives unlimited everyday text chats plus web search, file uploads and image creation. Pair it with Claude Free for writing and long documents and Gemini for Google apps and research, and you’ll rarely need to pay. For video, Google Flow gives 50 free credits a day. We checked every free plan below on the vendors’ own pages between October 22 and 25, 2026.
Most “best free AI” lists rank hundreds of tools. That isn’t how people actually use AI. You need one good chatbot, maybe a second as a backup, and a handful of specialist tools for images, video and photos. So this list picks the ten free AI tools that are worth keeping, and tells you exactly where each free plan stops.

1. ChatGPT Free: best free AI overall
OpenAI’s free plan runs on GPT-5.6 Luna, and everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse safeguards. You also get web search, file and image uploads, data analysis, image creation and existing GPTs. Uploads, images, voice and data analysis have their own caps, and ChatGPT tells you when you hit one.
Watch out for: ads may appear on the free tier in some countries. Upgrade: Plus is $20 a month. Before you paste in anything private, read is ChatGPT safe.
2. Claude Free: best free AI for writing
Anthropic’s free plan uses Sonnet and Haiku, with web search, file creation, Artifacts, memory, connectors and voice mode. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour window rather than a fixed message count, so long chats and big files use it up faster. Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly.
3. Gemini: best free AI for research
Google’s free Gemini plan uses its Flash-Lite model and still includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas and custom Gems, plus 15 GB of Google storage. Limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, is the cheapest paid AI plan on this list.
4. DeepSeek: best free AI with no paywall
DeepSeek’s chat app is free on the web and mobile with its V4.1 Flash model, and there’s no paid chat plan at all. It has fewer extras than ChatGPT or Gemini, and the company is based in China, which matters for sensitive work data. Coders can also use it free in OpenCode.

5. Bing Image Creator: most free AI images
Free with a Microsoft account, Bing Image Creator gives 15 fast creations a day and then up to 200 prompts in 24 hours at standard speed. Creations are kept for 90 days. For edits of your own photos, Gemini is better; for posters with readable text, try Ideogram, which gives 30 free credits a week to Google, Apple and Microsoft sign-ins. More picks in our best free AI image generator list.
6. Google Flow: best free AI video
Everyone gets 50 Flow credits a day. Veo 3.1 Lite costs 10 credits per 4, 6 or 8-second clip, so that’s five clips or 40 seconds of video a day, from a prompt or from your own photo. Videos carry Google’s invisible SynthID mark, and the visible watermark can be switched off outside India, South Korea and Vietnam. See the best free AI video generators and our new guide to image to video free AI.

7. Canva Free: best free AI for design
Canva Free includes the drag-and-drop editor, 1.6M+ templates and up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses. That allowance now covers Canva Craft, Canva’s own image model launched on October 22, which is built for layouts with legible text. Pro costs US$144 a year.
8. Upscayl: best free AI photo upscaler
Upscayl is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux with no account, credits or watermark. You need a Vulkan-compatible graphics card. Browser-only options are in our free AI upscaler guide.
9. Poised: best free AI headshots
Poised makes unlimited headshots at 819 x 1024 pixels with no account and no watermark, which is plenty for LinkedIn. Compare it with Magic Hour, Canva and Gemini in our free AI headshot generator list.
10. Local AI models: best free AI for privacy
If you have a decent computer, open models run offline with no limits and nothing leaves your machine. Our best local AI models guide shows what your hardware can handle.
What “free” really costs you
- Limits, not features: most free plans now include the good features but cap how often you use them. Gemini and Claude reset every 5 hours; Flow resets daily.
- Public images: some free image tools publish what you make. Ideogram’s free images are public, for example.
- Watermarks: nearly every free video tool marks its downloads. Google Flow’s mark is invisible in most countries; local Wan 2.2 has none.
- Your data: several free chatbots use conversations to improve their models by default, so check the data controls in each app’s settings.
When is it worth paying?
Pay when the limits cost you time every day, not before. For most people one plan is enough. If you live in Google apps, Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the cheapest step up. For heavy writing, Claude Pro is $17 a month billed yearly. If ChatGPT is your main tool, Plus is $20. Keep the other free plans as backups for when you hit a limit.
